Thorough, Comfortable Care From a Team That Knows You

What Is an Annual Well Woman Exam?

An annual well woman exam is a yearly check of your overall and reproductive health. It is a chance to screen early for potential issues, talk through anything on your mind, and stay ahead of your health year after year.

At GoFertility your exam is performed by Sophi, our nurse practitioner, so you are cared for in a way that feels comfortable from start to finish. Dr. Saji Jacob, our board certified OB/GYN, oversees your care at our Creve Coeur office.

Care Built Around Your Comfort

Two things we hear from patients again and again. They want to be seen by someone they feel at ease with, and they do not want to wait months for an appointment. We built our care around both.

Care With a Woman You Trust

Your well woman exam is performed by Sophi, our nurse practitioner. If you feel more comfortable being seen by a woman, you are in good hands from the first minute to the last.

What Your Visit Includes

Your annual visit covers more than one thing. Here is what Sophi and the team will look at during your time with us.

  • General physical exam
  • Breast exam
  • Pelvic exam
  • Pap smear
  • Review of your current health and family health history
  • Update on your current medications (please bring your list)
  • Medication refills if you need them
  • A look at whether you need added screenings, such as a mammogram or bone density screening

What to Expect During Your Exam

Here is how each part of your visit works, so nothing feels unexpected.

Getting Comfortable

One of our clinical staff starts by taking your weight, pulse, and blood pressure, and then takes you to the exam room. You are given a gown and as much time as you need to change and get ready in private before the exam begins.

Breast Exam

This gentle, painless check looks for any unusual lumps, cysts, rashes, or changes. You will be asked to move your arms into a few positions so both breasts can be compared. Sophi gently checks the breasts, underarms, and collarbone area for anything that feels out of the ordinary. Catching changes early is a big part of why this exam is done every year.

Pelvic Exam

After a gentle external check, a lubricated speculum is carefully placed so your provider can view the vagina and cervix. Light pressure on the abdomen helps check for any tenderness and to feel the shape and position of the uterus and ovaries. You are guided through each step at a pace that keeps you comfortable.

Pap Smear

Done at the same time as the pelvic exam, a Pap smear is a quick, gentle swipe of the cervix with a small brush to collect a few cells. Collecting the sample takes only a moment. We send it to our local laboratory, and results are available within a week or two.

FAQ

Will a woman perform my exam?

Yes. Your well woman exam is performed by Sophi, our nurse practitioner. If being seen by a woman matters to you, you are in the right place.

How soon can I be seen?

We hold time for new patients and will offer an appointment typically within one week. Call us or fill out the form and our team will find a time that works for you.

Does the exam hurt?

Most of the exam is painless. The pelvic exam and Pap smear may feel like brief pressure, and Sophi will go at a pace that keeps you comfortable and lets you ask questions along the way.

How often should I have a well woman exam?

Once a year is the general guidance for most women. Depending on your health, your provider may suggest a different schedule that is right for you.

Do I need one if I feel healthy?
